May 27, (THEWILL) – AZ Alkmaar has announced a series of significant measures in response to the violent incidents that occurred after their Europa Conference League semifinal, second leg, against West Ham United last week.
The visitors secured a 1-0 victory on Thursday, earning them a spot in the final against Fiorentina on June 7th. However, as THEWILL reported, the match was marred by a disturbing altercation between the families and friends of the West Ham squad and home supporters. The club has taken decisive action, including multiple fan bans and heightened stadium security.
Following the final whistle, family members and friends of the West Ham squad were subjected to an attack by AZ Alkmaar supporters. Home fans managed to breach a fence and confront the West Ham contingent, who were seated in a reserved section at the AZ Stadium. In response to these distressing events, the club has issued 43 stadium bans on fans and will not be serving alcohol in the Van der Ben stand, which is notorious for housing the ‘ultras,’ during Sunday’s match against PSV Eindhoven.
Additionally, AZ Alkmaar has installed nets around the visitors’ section and plans to bolster the stewarding team. AZ General Director Robert Eenhoorn expressed regret over the necessity of these measures, stating: “It is a pity that these measures have to be taken, but after the events of last week, there was no other way.”
The club has emphasised its cooperation with the ongoing investigation by the authorities and has not ruled out the possibility of further fan bans. Despite the regrettable incidents, AZ Alkmaar has already secured a top-four finish, ensuring their participation in next season’s Europa League qualifiers.
