June 23, (THEWILL) – Robert Lewandowski’s desire to leave Bayern was given a boost when his preferred club Barcelona issued their first offer for the striker with a simultaneous offer for Sevilla’s Jules Kounde to improve their defence.

Lewandowski, who has not hidden his decision to exit Bayern, is valued at over €40 million, and cash-strapped Barca is not believed to have made an initial offer that is as high as that. The 33-year-old’s contract expires in 2023, but the German club continues to maintain that he will serve out the remaining year of it.

Oliver Kahn, Bayern CEO, said at the presentation of Sadio Mane on Wednesday, said: “The situation hasn’t changed. Robert has a contract with us for another year and we expect to see him on the first day of pre-season in July.”

Bayern has also questioned if Barca can complete a transaction of this size given their current financial situation, both in private and in public.

Uli Hoeness, a former Bayern president, said: “Barcelona want to sign Lewandowski when they had a debt of €1.3 billion six months ago. In Germany, they would have been bankrupt for a long time. The bankruptcy judge is at the door and they are making million euro offers for a Bayern player.”
