November 16, (THEWILL) – Ramon Planes, Barcelona’s technical secretary, has been released from his contract with the Catalan club. THEWILL recalls that Planes requested that his contract with Barcelona be terminated early.
His contract was set to expire in the summer of 2022, but he has decided to depart the Nou Camp immediately.
An official statement posted to the club’s website read: “FC Barcelona and Ramón Planes have reached an agreement to terminate the contract that bound both parties until 30 June 2022, at the request of the man who had until now been the club’s technical secretary.
“The club wishes to publicly express its gratitude to Ramón Planes for his commitment, professionalism and contributions throughout this last two years, and wishes him the best of luck and every success in the future.”
It is yet another crucial background move for Barcelona as President Joan Laporta implements changes in the inner workings of the club to afford him greater control after winning an election in March.
It comes after Laporta recently fired Ronald Koeman as manager due to a poor run of form. So far, he has appointed Xavi, a former midfielder, as their new manager. On Saturday, Xavi will take charge of Barcelona, who are currently in ninth place in La Liga, for the first time against Espanyol.
Some were surprised that Planes stayed on when Bartomeu stepped down and Laporta took over as president, but this had been predicted for some time. It is also considered an indication of Xavi assuming command following his appointment as manager.
Planes will be remembered for bringing in Ronald Araujo and Pedri, two important young players. Both players have cemented their places in Barcelona’s first team.
However, he is also known for less productive signings like Kevin Prince Boateng, Arturo Vidal, and Martin Braithwaite, as well as being party to Bartomeu’s dubious transfer policies.
