June 30, (THEWILL) – Spanish top division champions, Barcelona, have successfully reached an agreement with French defender, Samuel Umtiti, to terminate his contract, the club revealed on Friday.
The 29-year-old player, who originally joined Barca from Olympique Lyonnais in 2016, had three years remaining on his contract. Unfortunately, Umtiti’s career at the club was hampered by a series of injuries following his pivotal role in helping France secure victory in the 2018 World Cup. Consequently, he spent the last season on loan at Serie A side, Lecce.
During his tenure with Barcelona, Umtiti made significant contributions to the team, participating in 133 matches and garnering an impressive collection of accolades, including three Copa del Rey trophies, two La Liga titles, and two domestic super cups. Despite his undeniable talent and achievements, the mutual decision to terminate the contract is set to pave the way for new opportunities for both the player and the club.
