SAN FRANCISCO, November 22, (THEWILL) – La Liga club Barcelona are assessing the knee injury sustained by centre back Gerard Pique in their 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid on Saturday evening. The Spaniard could be facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines and may miss the next four to six months of action.

The 33-year-old defender was involved in a collision with Rojiblancos striker Angel Correa. It was telling that he had to be helped off the field, unable to put any weight on his right leg, and close to tears.

Initial tests carried out on the spot and in the dressing room suggest that the World Cup winner could be out of contention for an extended period of time.

According to reports monitored by THEWILL, doctors in Madrid have informed the Blaugrana that he may have to undergo surgery due to a serious structural problem in the knee. A medical intervention as such could keep Pique out of the team for a further six months.

The Catalan giants will likely have to cope without their talismanic centre back for the coming months. The official Barca website was not giving anything away. Rather, a simple explanation says that the defender has suffered a ‘sprained knee’, and is waiting for more tests to assess the severity of the knock.

“Gerard Piqué has a sprained right knee,” the statement read. “The Barça centre back is waiting for more tests to ascertain the extent of the injury after a collision with Atlético striker Correa forced him off the field of play on the hour mark.”

Sergi Roberto also suffered a knock on his right thigh with not much known about how bad it is at the moment. Barca also said more tests will be required to ascertain the level of damage he sustained.

THEWILL recalls that Ansu Fati is still out after successful surgery on the internal meniscus of his left knee and as reported may not be in action for Barca until at least March next year.
