August 6, (THEWILL) – Serial Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich, began the new season of top flight football in Germany with an incredible 6-1 triumph at Eintracht Frankfurt, with Sadio Mane netting his first Bundesliga goal.
Their opponents, European League champions Frankfurt, appeared to be a difficult first opponent for the visitors, but Julian Nagelsmann’s team thumped them in spectacular fashion in what was their first competitive game without goal-machine Robert Lewandowski.
Yet, Bayern was already five goals ahead at the break in Friday’s curtain-raiser. Mane, who scored the third goal from a Serge Gnabry headed assist, was joined on the scoresheet by Joshua Kimmich, Benjamin Pavard, Jamal Musiala, and Gnabry himself.
Randal Kolo Muani gave Frankfurt some consolation when he pulled one back four minutes after the hour mark to make it 5-1, due to Manuel Neuer’s carelessness, but it was only a little hiccup in a brilliant Bayern performance. Musiala added a second goal late in the game to restore the five-goal gap and seal the victory for the champions.
Bayern, therefore, starts the new season where they ended the previous one, at the very top of the standings with maximum points and the initial feeling that they may very well not miss the contributions of Lewandowski. There is still a whole season to look forward to.
