July 28, (THEWILL) – Lewis Hamilton claimed victory at the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday, following the disqualification of his Mercedes teammate, George Russell. Russell had crossed the finish line first but was later found to have an underweight car during post-race inspection.
The win marks Hamilton’s second of the 2024 season and 105th of his Formula One career. It continues Mercedes’ strong recent form, with the team now having won three of the last four races after struggling in previous years.
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri was promoted to second place, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc rounding out the podium in third. Russell had impressively nursed his tyres for 34 laps on a one-stop strategy to take the chequered flag, before his disqualification for being 1.5kg under the minimum weight limit.
“Heartbreaking,” Russell said on social media after the decision. “We left it all on the track today and I take pride in crossing the line first. There will be more to come.”
The result sees Hamilton close the gap in the drivers’ championship, though Max Verstappen of Red Bull maintains a healthy lead. The next race is the Dutch Grand Prix on August 25 following Formula One’s summer break.
