July 28, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered a 1-0 defeat against Spain in their second match of the Paris 2024 Olympics women’s football tournament. The game took place on Sunday night at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes, France. Despite a strong defensive performance, particularly from goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, the Nigerian team was unable to hold off the Spanish attack for the full 90 minutes.
The match was closely contested, with both teams creating opportunities throughout. Nigeria’s best chances came through Asisat Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade, but they were unable to convert. Spain dominated possession for long periods but struggled to break down the Nigerian defence until late in the game.
The decisive moment came five minutes before full-time when Alexia Putellas scored directly from a free-kick. Her cross-shot found its way into the net, finally beating the impressive Nnadozie who had made several crucial saves earlier in the match. Nigeria had a late chance to equalise through substitute Chinwendu Ihezuo, but she was unable to beat the Spanish goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation.
This result leaves Nigeria in a difficult position in their group. To qualify for the next round, they must beat Japan by at least two goals in their final group match and hope that Spain defeats Brazil. The Super Falcons will need to improve their attacking output while maintaining their defensive solidity if they are to progress in the tournament.
Coach Randy Waldrum made two changes to the starting lineup from the previous match against Brazil, bringing in Esther Okoronkwo and Asisat Oshoala. While these changes provided more attacking threat, Nigeria was ultimately unable to find the net against a strong Spanish side.
