June 14, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s rising star, Divine Nwachukwu, expressed his astonishment upon receiving his first call-up to the national squad for the TotalEnergies 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sierra Leone.
The 20-year-old attacking midfielder, who plays for Bendel Insurance, was one of four local players selected by head coach Jose Peseiro, recognising his exceptional performances for his club. Nwachukwu’s notable contributions of one goal and five assists helped lead the Vipers to the top of Group A during the regular season, and his three goals in the Nigeria Premier League playoffs must have caught the attention of Peseiro.

Having represented Nigeria at the Under-17 level, Nwachukwu acknowledged the challenges he has faced since then and expressed immense pride in being chosen by the Super Eagles’ head coach. Overjoyed by the unexpected invitation, Nwachukwu revealed: “When I got the text, I thought it was a joke.” Reflecting on his journey, he added: “To play for Bendel Insurance at my age and to do what I have done is amazing, and at least I got a reward. The coach saw me and picked me. It is a plus for me, and I am very happy for that.”
Nigeria suffered an unexpected 1-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in March, but swiftly retaliated with a victory in the subsequent home leg, securing a win against the Djurtus by the same scoreline. Currently sitting two points clear at the top of Group A, Peseiro’s side will secure their place in the prestigious tournament in Ivory Coast next year if they triumph over the Leone Stars in Monrovia.
