June 14, (THEWILL) – Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali is on Racing Santander’s radar, as they set their sights on acquiring his services from relegated Deportiva Ponferradina.
Nwakali has been a key player for Ponferradina, but his departure seems inevitable following the team’s relegation from La Liga 2. At a recent interview, Mikel Martija, the sporting director of Racing Santander, confirmed their interest in Nwakali. Martija also acknowledged that they were aware that the Nigerian midfielder was attracting attention from other clubs across Europe.

Ponferradina is one of four clubs, including Málaga, Ibiza, and Lugo, that faced relegation from the Segunda Division this season. In contrast, Racing Santander finished the season in a relatively comfortable 12th position, securing a ten-point cushion above the relegation zone.
With Ponferradina’s relegation, it becomes highly unlikely for a player of Nwakali’s calibre and profile to remain in the First RFEF, the third division of football in the Spanish hierarchy. It therefore increases their chances of bringing him to Racing Santander during this transfer season before play resumes in the 2023/2024 campaign.
