August 11, (THEWILL) – Karim Benzema has been named the UEFA Champions League player of the season, for the 2021/2022 season.

The attacker was in career-best shape last season, leading Real Madrid to their 14th UEFA Champions League victory with 15 goals and two assists. In matches against Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City, Benzema produced his best performances of the tournament as his goals saved Los Blancos from elimination and helped them advance.

Benzema tied Robert Lewandowski as the third-highest goalscorer in UEFA Champions League history after scoring 15 goals in the competition last season, giving him 86 goals overall in Europe’s most prestigious football competition.

On Wednesday night, Vinicius Junior, another Real Madrid player, won the UEFA Champions League award for young player of the year. Vinicius had a breakthrough season in the 2021/2022 campaign, scoring 22 goals across all leagues, including four in the Champions League.
