November 21, (THEWILL) — Black Panther star, Chadwick Boseman, was posthumously honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday in Los Angeles. The ceremony took place on Chadwick Boseman Day, declared in his memory.
The event was attended by loved ones and industry figures, including Michael B. Jordan, Letitia Wright, Viola Davis, Ryan Coogler, Disney CEO Bob Iger, and Boseman’s widow, Taylor Simone Ledward-Boseman, as well as his brothers Kevin and Derrick Boseman.
During the ceremony, Viola Davis, Ryan Coogler, and Simone Ledward-Boseman honoured Boseman’s life and lasting legacy.
“I have to believe that Chadwick is still alive. I can’t use the word ‘gone’ or ‘death’ really when thinking about him”, Davis said.
Describing him as “a mighty mighty elixir”, she added, “I celebrate him today. And I say to him, I hope all the angels in heaven just sang him to a beautiful rest… And I thank him for what he left behind in me, which is a burning ember that always guides me to a higher meaning of my work and my purpose.”
She concluded, “This star… shines a whole lot less brighter than Chadwick is in heaven.”
Coogler, who directed Black Panther, called Boseman a model of leadership and selflessness.
“When I think of Chadwick Boseman, I think of three things: leadership, teaching and generosity. He was an incredible leader”, he said.
“Even when he knew his days were limited and his moments were numbered, he still gave to the art form. He still threw himself into the fire.”
Boseman’s widow, Simone Ledward-Boseman, delivered an emotional tribute.
“Chad, today we recognise a lifetime of artistry. We recognise your skill and your devotion, and we cement your legacy as a hero and icon. You lived with honour, and you walked in truth. You were as brilliant as you were beautiful and as courageous as you were kind. We love you, we miss you, and we thank you”, she said.
She later joined Boseman’s brothers, Derrick and Kevin, to unveil the star.
Boseman, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 43 after a private battle with colon cancer, is remembered worldwide for his iconic portrayal of T’Challa in Black Panther and for his commitment to his craft both on and off screen.
