February 25, (THEWILL) — Norwegian side, Bodo/Glimt, made history on Wednesday night, becoming the first club from Norway to win a UEFA Champions League knockout tie after defeating Inter Milan 2-1 at San Siro to complete a 5-2 aggregate victory over last season’s Serie A runners-up.
The match demanded Inter attack from the outset following their 3-1 defeat in Norway the previous week, and the Italian club dominated the opening half with sustained pressure on the Bodo goal. Goalkeeper Nikita Haikin was in exceptional form throughout, tipping a dipping Federico Dimarco effort over the bar and parrying a Davide Frattesi header, while Alessandro Bastoni also nodded over from a corner.
The decisive blow came in the 58th minute when Manuel Akanji’s careless back pass found Ole Didrik Blomberg, whose shot was blocked by Yann Sommer before former AC Milan forward Jens Petter Hauge converted the rebound. The goal, born of defensive error, effectively ended the contest across both legs.
Hakon Evjen then doubled the visitors’ lead in the 72nd minute, controlling a precise pass from Hauge before striking cleanly across Sommer into the far corner. Bastoni pulled one back for Inter four minutes later, with goal-line technology confirming the ball had crossed the line, but the hosts could not mount any meaningful comeback from that point.
Bodo/Glimt will now advance to the round of 16 play-offs, where they will face either Manchester City or Sporting CP for a place in the quarter-finals, capping a remarkable night for Norwegian football on one of Europe’s grandest stages.
