September 02, (THEWILL) – For a second Bundesliga game, Nigerian forward, Victor Boniface, was the hero for Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, scoring twice to help his side to a 5-1 thrashing of promoted Darmstadt.
The result sends Leverkusen top of the table after three matches. Boniface, a summer signing from Belgian outfit, Union Saint-Gilloise, opened the scoring in style, with a shot from the right side of the six yard box, thanks a Jeremie Frimpong assist. Darmstadt equalised soon after through Oscar Vilhelmsson, but turned out to be a mere consolation as things changed after the break.
Argentine midfielder, Exequiel Palacios, restored Leverkusen’s lead shortly after half-time before Boniface grabbed his second just after the hour mark. German winger, Jonas Hofmann, a new arrival from Borussia Mönchengladbach, scored his first goal for the club, and their fourth of the match, to make it difficult for Darmstadt to find a way back.
Still, there was one more goal as Czech forward Adam Hlozek rounded off the rout late on. It was a clinical performance from Leverkusen, who have found form under manager Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard took over last October and has transformed the club’s fortunes.
Leverkusen now top the Bundesliga table on nine points from three matches. Next up is a huge clash with champions Bayern Munich on September 15, after the international break, while Darmstadt will look to bounce back at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach on the same weekend.
