May 07, (THEWILL) — Former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has been appointed a Visiting Scholar and Researcher at the African Studies Centre at Boston University, in a move that places his governance experience at the centre of academic inquiry into public policy and development in Africa.
The appointment, announced on Wednesday by the centre, which operates under the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies in the United States, will see Obaseki engage in structured research to assess the outcomes, challenges and institutional impacts of policies implemented during his eight-year tenure as governor of Edo State.
According to the institution, the research is expected to generate practical insights for policymakers across Africa, particularly those engaged in economic reforms, institutional strengthening and governance transformation.
Director of the African Studies Centre, Nimi Wariboko, described Obaseki’s appointment as a valuable addition to the centre’s academic community, noting that his practical governance background would enrich scholarly discussions on African development and leadership.
Wariboko said the former governor’s engagement with the university would allow him to refine his research framework through collaboration with global scholars and comparative analysis of governance models across different regions.
He added that Obaseki is expected to produce a book manuscript from his research work, which would contribute significantly to the centre’s academic output on African political economy and public administration.
According to him, the appointment also reinforces the centre’s tradition of hosting experienced African public leaders who have held executive responsibilities and are willing to document and share their governance experiences.
Reacting to the development, Obaseki described the appointment as an opportunity to critically reflect on his years in office and document the strategies, reforms and policy decisions undertaken during his administration in Edo State.
“I am excited by this appointment and the privilege it affords me to be part of this world-class university”, he said.
He added that the academic environment at Boston University would provide a strong platform for reflection, collaboration and intellectual exchange on governance, development policy and economic transformation in Africa.
Also commenting, Dean of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, Scott Taylor, said the institution was honoured to host the former governor and support his research on African political economy and public policy.
The African Studies Centre at Boston University, established in 1953, is one of the oldest Africa-focused research institutions in the United States and remains a major hub for scholarly engagement on African governance, development, and international policy discourse.
