November 14, (THEWILL) – Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson returns to professional boxing this Friday at age 58, facing social media personality Jake Paul in a sanctioned bout at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The Netflix-backed event has drawn significant criticism from boxing industry professionals regarding safety concerns.
The contest, scheduled for eight two-minute rounds, was initially planned for July but required postponement after Tyson experienced medical complications during a flight from Miami to Los Angeles.
The incident involved Tyson requiring treatment for a bleeding ulcer, adding to the controversy surrounding the match.
British boxing promoter Eddie Hearn voiced strong opposition to the bout.
He stated, “If anyone thinks that Mike Tyson should be in a ring at this age, you either have absolutely no emotional feelings toward the man, or you’re an idiot. It shouldn’t be happening.”
Industry reports indicated that Tyson will receive approximately £20 million for participating in the contest.
Paul enters the ring with a professional record of 10 wins and one loss, including seven knockouts.
The boxing career of the 27-year-old began in 2018, with previous opponents including professional boxers and mixed martial arts competitors.
During Tuesday’s open workout, Paul predicted, “It will be a short night for Mike.”
Tyson’s last professional fight occurred in 2005, resulting in a technical knockout loss to Kevin McBride.
Speaking at Wednesday’s press conference, Tyson maintained a reserved demeanour, simply stating: “I am just ready to fight. I am looking forward to fighting.”
The event will stream globally on Netflix, with thousands expected to attend in person at the Texas venue.
