March 29, (THEWILL) – Brazil have dismissed national men’s team coach, Dorival Junior, after their 4-1 loss to Argentina in a World Cup qualifier. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), confirmed his departure following a disappointing run of results.
Dorival, who took charge in January 2024, managed the team for 16 matches with a record of seven wins, six draws and three defeats. His tenure began positively with a 1-0 victory over England at Wembley Stadium, but recent performances failed to meet expectations.
“The Brazilian Football Confederation announces that coach Dorival Junior will no longer be in charge of the Brazilian National Team,” the CBF stated late on Friday. “The board thanks the professional and wishes him success in his continued career. From now on, the CBF will work to find a replacement.”
Brazil currently sit fourth in their qualifying group after 14 matches, having lost five games during the campaign. Despite their inconsistent form, they remain in a strong position to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Reports from Brazilian media suggest Al-Hilal coach Jorge Jesus is the frontrunner to replace Dorival, though Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti is also being considered. The CBF had previously approached Ancelotti before appointing Dorival last year.
