May 05, (THEWILL) – Brighton and Hove Albion pulled off a last-gasp victory against Manchester United, thanks to a penalty scored by Alexis Mac Allister in the dying moments of the game late on Thursday.
The penalty was awarded after Luke Shaw was deemed to have handled the ball, following a VAR review. However, much of the victory was due to Jason Steele, Brighton’s goalkeeper, who put in a solid performance, making several key saves to keep the home side in the game.
Both teams made changes to their starting line-ups, with Brighton notably playing Moises Caicedo in an unusual position at right-back. United had several opportunities to take the lead, but were unable to convert any of them into goals, with Casemiro and Anthony Martial both missing the target. The game was punctuated by a number of near misses and some contentious refereeing decisions.
Brighton had several opportunities at the beginning of the second half but were unable to convert them due to Mitoma making errors under pressure from Wan-Bissaka. Antony, who had just received a yellow card for kicking Mac Allister’s knee, also had a chance but shot just over the bar with a half volley from outside the box. It all came down to the penalty which the Argentine converted to give the hosts all three points.
With this win, Brighton moved up to sixth place in the Premier League table, overtaking Tottenham Hotspur. United remain in fourth place, two points behind Newcastle and four ahead of Liverpool. Brighton will face Everton in their next match, while United take on West Ham.
