July 06, (THEWILL) – Brighton and Hove Albion have finalised the acquisition of Dutch midfielder, Mats Wieffer, from Feyenoord, for a reported fee of £25.4 million. The 24-year-old has committed his future to the Seagulls by signing a five-year contract, marking a significant addition to Roberto De Zerbi’s squad for the 2024/25 season.
Wieffer, who joined Feyenoord in 2022, quickly established himself as a pivotal player under former manager Arne Slot, now at Liverpool. His contributions were instrumental in Feyenoords Eredivisie title triumph in 2023 and their KNVB Beker victory the following season, highlighting his ability to perform at the highest level of Dutch football.
Brighton’s technical director, David Weir, expressed his enthusiasm for the signing, stating: “We’re delighted to welcome Mats to the club, a player whose qualities we have admired for a long time. He has a lot of experience in the Champions League as well as the Eredivisie and has developed into one of the best deep-lying midfielders in Europe.”
Despite making his international debut for the Netherlands in March 2023, Wieffer was not selected for Ronald Koeman’s Euro 2024 squad. However, this omission has not diminished Brighton’s confidence in his abilities, with the club viewing him as a key component in their midfield strategy moving forward.
The arrival of Wieffer follows Brighton’s recent £33m acquisition of Yankuba Minteh from Newcastle United, reuniting the midfielder with his former Feyenoord teammate. These signings demonstrate Brighton’s ambition to build on their recent successes in both domestic and European competitions.
