December 23, (THEWILL) — British singer-songwriter Chris Rea, best known for the festive classic “Driving Home for Christmas,” has died at the age of 74, his family has announced.
Rea died peacefully in hospital on Monday following a short illness, according to a statement from his wife and two daughters.
Born in 1951 in Middlesbrough, England, Rea rose to fame in the late 1970s and 1980s with hits such as Fool (If You Think It’s Over), Let’s Dance and The Road to Hell.
His holiday song “Driving Home for Christmas,” released in 1986, became a popular seasonal favourite in the UK and internationally, returning to the charts each festive season.
Across a career spanning more than five decades, Rea released over 25 studio albums and sold millions of records worldwide.
Rea faced serious health challenges, including pancreatic cancer and a stroke in 2016, but continued to record and perform throughout his life.
