June 8 (THEWILL) — British-Nigerian singer and songwriter Talay Riley has died after a fatal stabbing in East London. He was 35.
Riley, whose real name was Mark Yinka Orabiyi, was reportedly attacked on Pankhurst Avenue in Silvertown on the morning of June 5. Emergency services responded to the scene, but he was pronounced dead.
The Metropolitan Police have launched a murder investigation into the incident. A second man who was injured during the attack remains in hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
Police initially arrested three people in connection with the case.
A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and later released on bail pending further enquiries.
A 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, who were also arrested on suspicion of murder, were later released with no further action.
In a statement released on Sunday, Riley’s family confirmed his death and described the loss as an “overwhelming sadness.”
“It is with overwhelming sadness that we confirm that Mark ‘Yinka’ Orabiyi, professionally known as Talay Riley, passed away yesterday morning,” the family said.
They added: “Talay will fondly be remembered by those who knew him publicly for his incredible talent as a Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum-selling songwriter and artist.
“For those that knew and loved him personally, it is his humour, generous spirit and unmistakable presence that will be missed the most.”
Riley built a successful career as a singer, songwriter and producer, working with major international artists including Dua Lipa, Britney Spears, Usher, Craig David and Chip.
He was also known for co-writing Chip’s chart-topping single, “Oopsy Daisy.”
Tributes have continued to pour in from across the music industry as fans and colleagues remember his contributions to music and songwriting.
Police said investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death are ongoing.
