The announcement came just weeks after the Recording Academy introduced a new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category for the 69th Grammy Awards. Under the rules, songs entered in the category must include meaningful use of one or more Asian languages.

The new category has received mixed reactions from K-pop fans. While some welcomed the recognition, others argued it separates Asian artists into their own category instead of allowing them to compete equally in the major Grammy awards.

BTS had been widely expected to compete for top honours after the success of its comeback album “Arirang” and its chart-topping single “Swim”. Instead, the group decided not to submit its music for consideration this year.

The Recording Academy has not publicly commented on BTS’ decision.

Formed in 2013, BTS has become one of the world’s biggest music acts. The group was the first K-pop act to receive a Grammy nomination and has earned five nominations over the years but has yet to win. All seven members have also been voting members of the Recording Academy since 2019.

BTS is currently on its World Tour Arirang, following the release of its comeback album after the members completed South Korea’s mandatory military service.

The tour continues with U.S. dates beginning in August.
