July 18, (THEWILL) – Team Nigeria’s 4×100 metre men’s relay squad is set to make another attempt at securing a ticket to the Budapest 2023 World Championships, following two previous unsuccessful tries.
The team will depart from Lagos for Cotonou, Benin Republic, on Tuesday, for their next attempt. In their last performance at the Deji Tinubu/Lagos Series semi-final, the team improved their time to 38.56 seconds, only to falter in the final with a time of 38.78 seconds, leaving them in the 17th position for qualification. Optimistic about their chances, President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Tonobok Okowa, was confident in the team’s ability to clinch the qualification in Cotonou on July 20.
Meanwhile, Team Nigeria’s women counterparts have achieved success in securing the 4x400m relay ticket, further adding to the country’s qualification in the women’s 4x100m and mixed relay events. However, the men’s 4x400m squad, who failed to secure their qualification in the previous competition, will not be participating in the upcoming event in Cotonou.
Despite a promising start by Dubem Nwachukwu, supported by Ezekiel Nathaniel, Samuel Ogazi and Chidi Okezie, were unable to produce the necessary performance, finishing with a time of 3.02.64 seconds, placing them in the 19th position.
