July 18, (THEWILL) – Nigerian midfielder, Kelechi Nwakali, is set to finalise a two-year contract with GD Chaves, a top-tier Portuguese club, after his spell with Spanish team, Ponferradina.
Nwakali’s commendable contributions were unable to prevent Ponferradina’s relegation, as the club endured a disappointing season. Despite interest from various Spanish teams, Nwakali opted for a move to Portugal, ending his three-year stint in Spain. The official announcement of his signing is expected soon, following a routine medical examination.
Nwakali, a former Under-17 World Cup golden ball winner, made 36 appearances for Ponferradina during the previous season, registering only one goal and four assists. However, his performances were in vain as the team dropped to the lower tier. Following Ponferradina’s decision to allow him to leave for a nominal fee, GD Chaves have successfully negotiated a deal for the 25-year-old Nigerian international. Nwakali’s transfer to Chaves marks his second spell in Portugal, having previously spent time on loan at Porto B from Arsenal.
This move provides Nwakali with a fresh opportunity to establish himself and contribute to GD Chaves’ performance in the upcoming season. Chaves, founded 73 years ago, finished last season’s Portuguese Primeira Liga in a commendable 7th place. The addition of Nwakali to their squad, known for his talent and previous achievements, represents a significant step toward strengthening the team for improved performance.
An official announcement regarding Nwakali’s signing is expected within the next few days, once the routine medical examination is completed. With all parties agreeing to the terms of the transfer, Nwakali’s arrival brings hope for a more prosperous period after his challenging experiences in Spain.
