BEVERLY HILLS, November 24, (THEWILL) – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced its decision to hold the December session of its Ordinary General Assembly via videoconference. This decision was reached in keeping with the regulatory guidelines and recommended protocols of CAF’s Medical Committee.
The meeting was initially scheduled as a physical event for Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). However, due to the swift to a virtual environment, it will retain the scheduled date of Friday, December 11, but will be directed from the CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.
It was a decision reached based on an analysis of the figures regarding the evolution of COVID-19 in Africa with several trends heralding the onset of a second wave in various parts of the continent.
The Emergency Committee of the Federation aligned with the recommendation of the Medical Committee not to take precautions about the pandemic for granted. Hence, CAF is complying with all measures to protect the health of all stakeholders involved as much as possible.
The General Assembly is CAF’s supreme authority and its meeting will define the Federation’s general policy and how to best implement it decisions.
It involves representatives of the affiliated national associations, members of the CAF Executive Committee, Honorary Presidents and Vice-Presidents. It also includes members and delegates from its zonal unions.
THEWILL believes next month’s session will be crucial for the Federation given yesterday’s five-year ban and huge fine the world football governing body FIFA slammed on embattled CAF President Ahmad Ahmad for abuse of office and corrupt practices.
The Assembly has its work cut out for it on that subject.
