March 26, (THEWILL) – Cameroon’s national football team coach, Rigobert Song, is facing mounting pressure to save his job as he takes the Indomitable Lions to Johannesburg for Tuesday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Namibia.
Despite Cameroon’s higher ranking, the Brave Warriors managed to pull off a surprise 1-1 draw in Yaoundé on Friday, much to the embarrassment of the Lions. The match is Namibia’s home game but will be played at Orlando Stadium due to a lack of standard facilities in Namibia.
Cameroon is expected to qualify from group C for the Africa Cup of Nations finals in the Ivory Coast next year. However, the team’s recent performance has been lacklustre, with the draw against Namibia coming after their defeat to Ivory Coast added to their inability to progress to the second stage of the World Cup in Qatar.
Additionally, Song’s past altercation with star goalkeeper Andre Onana has not helped matters. Onana left the camp and has not been picked for the doubleheader against Namibia. The team’s poor performance has led to speculation about Song’s position, with some questioning whether he should be fired.
The team will also have to contend with several injuries, with Christopher Wooh not travelling with the squad to Johannesburg after receiving stitches in his upper lip, and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Faï Collins, and Karl Toko Ekambi already out with injuries.
