May 22, (THEWILL) – Carmelo Anthony, the revered former Knicks forward and future Hall of Famer, has officially announced his retirement from professional basketball at the age of 38.
Bringing an end to his illustrious 19-season career, Anthony shared a heartfelt video montage of his career highlights on social media, expressing gratitude to the fans, communities, and cities that supported him throughout his journey. In a poignant message, Anthony said, “Now the time has come for me to say goodbye to the court where I made my name, to the game that gave me purpose and pride.”
He acknowledged that his legacy extended beyond basketball and expressed excitement for the future. Anthony also passed the torch to his 16-year-old son, Kiyan, affirming that his legacy would live on through him.
Anthony’s retirement marks the conclusion of a remarkable career that spanned multiple teams, including the Knicks and the Lakers. During his prime years with the Knicks from 2011 to 2017, Anthony achieved seven of his 10 All-Star selections and won the NBA’s scoring title in 2013. His time with the Knicks was characterised by unforgettable moments and strong community involvement.
Recognising his significant contributions, the Knicks released a statement honouring Anthony’s impact on and off the court, stating: “Melo gave The Garden crowd some unforgettable memories and garnered multiple All-Star and All-NBA selections… He also led the way off the court with participation in countless community programs.” Anthony’s achievements include being named to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team and winning three Olympic gold medals.
