March 12, (THEWILL) – Manchester United held on for a goalless draw against Southampton despite being reduced to ten men at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Casemiro was sent off for a high challenge on Carlos Alcaraz, leaving his Red Devils’ teammates to weather the Southampton storm for over half of the match.
Despite the huge challenge facing them, Southampton showed great endeavour from the off and had the first half-sight of goal. They worked a free-kick around the box before play switched to an open Kyle Walker-Peters, but David De Gea denied him with a save from a tight angle.
United had their chances too, with Bruno Fernandes peeling over to the left and helping release Marcus Rashford into the channel. However, their efforts were either saved by goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu or denied by the Southampton defence.
The draw leaves United two points clear of fourth-placed Tottenham but with a game in hand, while rock-bottom Southampton are now two points from safety. Next up, United will face Real Betis in the Europa League on Thursday, while Southampton will take on Brentford in the EPL on Wednesday.
