April 01, (THEWILL) – Aston Villa stunned Chelsea with a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge, sending the Londoners into the bottom half of the Premier League table.
The visitors were far from the better team statistically, but two well-taken goals from Ollie Watkins and John McGinn, were enough to secure the win.
Chelsea had a chance to score early on after a mistake from Emi Martinez gifted them possession, but Villa’s goalkeeper made a crucial save to deny Mykhailo Mudryk. Watkins soon had a chance of his own, but failed to capitalise on a one-on-one opportunity.
Despite enjoying the majority of the possession, Chelsea struggled to break down Villa’s resilient defence. McGinn hit the crossbar before Watkins scored the opener, and the latter was involved in the second goal as well, setting up McGinn to curl a beautiful shot into the net.
Chelsea will host Liverpool on Tuesday, while Aston Villa will play away against Leicester City on the same day.
