December 19, (THEWILL) – As part of Chelsea’s ambitions to renovate their stadium, the London club has submitted a proposal to purchase a piece of property next to Stamford Bridge.
Given its location in London, the Blues have run into problems while trying to enlarge their stadium in the past. Chelsea operates in a small space and is surrounded by buildings and railroad tracks. As a result, renovation plans have caused conflicts with the Council throughout Roman Abramovich’s tenure.
The Blues have now submitted a £50 million bid to purchase a vacant plot of land right next to the stadium, as new co-owner Todd Boehly is dedicated to renovating Stamford Bridge and seeing it get approved accordingly.
The bid deadline for the 1.2-acre property, which was placed up for sale in October, passed earlier this month, and Chelsea’s offer was submitted on time, according to reports monitored by THEWILL. Yet, uncertainty remains regarding competing offers, and the plot’s future will not be decided until the new year.
The fact that the Stamford Bridge freehold is owned by the shareholder organisation Chelsea Pitch Owners (CPO) presents another problem for Boehly because it means the club would require approval from the CPO to leave its current location, something the CPO has passionately resisted in the past.
