August 04, (THEWILL) – Fan Zhendong of China won gold in the men’s table tennis singles final at the Paris Olympics on Sunday, defeating Sweden’s Truls Moregard 4-1. The victory marks a comeback for Fan, who missed out on gold in Tokyo three years ago.
The match was close in the early stages, with Moregard taking the first game 11-7. However, Fan rallied to win the next two games 11-9 each. The Chinese player then closed out the match by winning the final two games 11-8.
This gold adds to China’s success in table tennis at the Paris Games, following wins in women’s singles and mixed doubles. For Sweden, Moregard’s silver comes after an impressive run that included eliminating world number one Wang Chuqin.
In the bronze medal match, 17-year-old Felix Lebrun secured France’s first Olympic table tennis medal since 2000, pleasing the home crowd. This result highlights the emergence of young talent in the sport.
