July 24, (THEWILL) — American singer Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to a charge linked to a violent confrontation at a London nightclub in 2023, avoiding a trial over more serious allegations.
The 37-year-old singer entered his plea at Southwark Crown Court on Friday, July 24, in a brief hearing that lasted less than five minutes.
Brown had originally faced charges, including attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent, causing actual bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon. Those charges were dropped after he pleaded guilty to the lesser offence.
The case relates to an incident at Tape, a private members’ club in Mayfair, London, on February 19, 2023. Prosecutors had accused Brown of being involved in an altercation with music producer, Abraham Diaw, during the incident.
The incident was captured on surveillance footage outside the club, according to prosecutors.
They told the court that Brown allegedly struck the victim with a glass bottle before his co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, allegedly punched him. Prosecutors also said the victim was kicked while on the floor and later received treatment for head and knee injuries at St Mary’s Hospital.
Brown’s co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty to the same charge. Akinlolu, who performs under the name Hoody Baby, was also accused of being involved in the confrontation.
The offence, known in UK law as affray, involves using or threatening violence in a way that causes others to fear for their safety.
Judge Tony Baumgartner scheduled sentencing for both men for October 26, 2026. Brown could face further legal consequences depending on the court’s decision.
The singer had previously been released on bail after providing a £5 million security fee as part of his bail conditions. The arrangement allowed him to continue his international tour while following court requirements
