July 12, (THEWILL) – The South American football governing body (CONMEBOL), has launched a disciplinary investigation into violent incidents that occurred after the Copa America semi-final, between Uruguay and Colombia in Charlotte. The match, which took place on Wednesday, ended with clashes involving players and fans at the Bank of America Stadium.
Uruguay striker, Darwin Nunez, was among the players who entered the stands and engaged in physical altercations with spectators. José María Giménez, Uruguay’s central defender, stated that players intervened to protect their family members, who were in danger. He criticised the lack of police presence in the affected area.
CONMEBOL described the events as “unacceptable” and warned that similar behaviour would not be tolerated at Sunday’s final between Argentina and Colombia in Miami. The organisation emphasised its commitment to maintaining a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for all spectators and participants.
The investigation aims to determine the sequence of events and identify those responsible for the violence. It remains unclear whether any Uruguayan players will face suspension for the third-place playoff against Canada, scheduled for Saturday, at the same venue.
CONMEBOL stressed the importance of preserving the spirit of the sport and ensuring that the Copa America final, watched by millions worldwide, remains a celebration of football rather than a display of violence.
