June 27, (THEWILL) – Dame Anna Wintour, the legendary editor-in-chief of American Vogue, has announced her decision to step down after an unprecedented 37-year reign at the helm of the iconic fashion magazine.
The 75-year-old British-born fashion authority made the announcement during a staff meeting on Thursday, revealing that Vogue will be introducing a new “head of editorial content” role. While stepping away from her position as editor-in-chief — the longest in Vogue’s history — Wintour will retain her titles as Global Editorial Director of Vogue and Chief Content Officer at Condé Nast, the magazine’s parent company.
Addressing staff, Wintour reflected on her evolution in the role and expressed her passion for nurturing future talent.
“Anybody in a creative field knows how essential it is never to stop growing in one’s work. When I became the editor of Vogue, I was eager to prove to all who might listen that there was a new, exciting way to imagine an American fashion magazine,” she said. “Now, I find that my greatest pleasure is helping the next generation of impassioned editors storm the field with their own ideas, supported by a new, exciting view of what a major media company can be.”
She lightened the mood with her trademark wit, adding that she plans to remain Vogue’s “tennis and theatre editor in perpetuity.”
Wintour was made a Dame Commander by Queen Elizabeth II in 2017 for her contributions to fashion and journalism, and was recently appointed a Companion of Honour by King Charles III — one of the United Kingdom’s highest accolades.
During her storied tenure, Wintour transformed American Vogue by blending high fashion with accessible style and elevating emerging models and designers to international prominence. She also pioneered the magazine’s evolution into a digital powerhouse and cultural authority.
Despite stepping down from her editorial post, Wintour will continue to lead the prestigious Met Gala, a role she has held since 1995, further cementing her position as one of the most influential figures in global fashion.
Her departure marks the end of an era, but her influence on the industry—and the next generation of fashion editors—remains indelible.
