May 18, (THEWILL) — Music star, Davido, returned to his alma mater, Babcock University, on Sunday, May 17, 2026, 11 years after graduating.
The singer was received by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Afolarin Ojewole, and other university officials. He toured the campus, visited the music department, and spoke with the media at the WAD Media Studio.
He pledged to expand the music department and provide a dedicated building with world-class equipment.
“I feel like it’s a department that needs its own building, and furnishing the music department with the required equipment just like the personal one I recently did in Lagos. It’s going to be a high-class music studio. So, I’m ready to donate and give back to the school and make sure we have proper standards”, he stated.
Davido added, “Music is oil and creativity right now is oil, too,” and said he hopes to finalise plans with the Vice Chancellor before the end of the year.
Reflecting on his time at Babcock, he said the university taught him discipline, which has helped his career.
He also recalled meeting his wife, Chioma, there, and noted that many of his earliest fans were fellow students.
“I studied the music, taught myself, self-taught. My advice to anybody coming up is, first things first, believe in yourself”, he said, urging students to prioritise education even while pursuing music.
Vice Chancellor Professor Ojewole described the visit as a homecoming. He praised Davido and his family for their contributions to the university, including scholarships, infrastructure, and support for the music programme.
Dr Segun Ojuola, Head of the Music Department, called the visit “a groundbreaking event and a homecoming for one of our own, a global icon.”
