November 19, (THEWILL) – Benfica forward, Angel Di Maria, has revealed he is studying to become a coach while continuing his playing career. The 36-year-old Argentine said he started viewing football from both player and manager perspectives since turning 30.
The World Cup winner, who retired from international duty after winning his second Copa America in July, noted the stark differences between playing and managing. “The coaching side is much more difficult because it takes much more time. Players just train and go home”, Di Maria explained.
Currently in strong form for Benfica with five goals and two assists in 14 matches this season, Di Maria plans to spend time with his family after retirement before potentially moving into management. His recent contributions include scoring in Benfica’s 4-0 UEFA Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid.
The former Real Madrid, Manchester United and Paris St Germain star remains under contract with Benfica until June 2025. His 20-year playing career has given him experience at some of Europe’s top clubs, providing valuable knowledge for his potential future role in management.
Di Maria’s move towards coaching education mirrors many former players, who transition into management after their playing days. However, his early start in studying the tactical side of football, beginning six years ago, shows his long-term planning for a career beyond the pitch.
