July 10, (THEWILL) – In the 2022 Wimbledon men’s singles final on Sunday at the All England Club in London, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic defeated Nick Kyrgios in four sets after falling behind early.
Djokovic won his fourth successive Wimbledon title 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3), leaving him one short of the Open era record of five straight wins shared by Roger Federer and Bjorn Borg.
Similar to his most recent pair of games, Djokovic struggled to get going on Sunday, getting broken once, and losing to Kyrgios in the first set. In the quarterfinals against Italian Jannik Sinner, he lost the first two sets before coming back to win. Against Cameron Norrie in the semi-final, he also dropped the opening set before winning the following three.
Kyrgios displayed some of the form that enabled him advance to the semi-final before receiving a walkover to the final after the injured Rafael Nadal withdrew. Yet, he ran into Djokovic’s tenacity, and started shouting at supporters in his player’s box after many of his errors in the second set, which caused his focus to fray. This did not help against a technically gifted player like Djokovic, who won in the end.
With seven wins won throughout the course of his career, Djokovic is now level with American tennis great Pete Sampras for second most men’s Wimbledon singles titles in the Open era, just one behind Federer’s record of eight. The victory means the Serbian earned his 21st Grand Slam championship overall, second only to Rafael Nadal’s 22.
