July 8 (THEWILL) — Dolly Parton has announced that her new Broadway musical, “DOLLY: A True Original Musical,” will begin previews at New York’s St. James Theatre on December 7, 2026.
The show officially opens on January 19, 2027, Parton’s 81st birthday.
The musical tells the story of Parton’s life, from her childhood in Tennessee to becoming a global music star.
It features some of her biggest hits, including “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” “I Will Always Love You,” and “Coat of Many Colors,” as well as new songs written for the show.
“Now, this isn’t a story about sparkle and shine on the outside. It’s about where I really come from, what I’ve lived, what I’ve lost, what I’ve loved, and how I’ve found my way,” Parton said in a video announcing the production.
She added that the story will be told in her “own words and through the music that’s been part of [her] every step of the journey.”
“This really is a dream come true. I can’t wait to share it with all of you.”
The show is directed by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher, with choreography by Emmy Award winner Mandy Moore.
The book was written by Parton and two-time Emmy Award winner Maria S. Schlatter.
Casting has not yet been announced.
The announcement comes after Parton canceled her planned “Dolly: Live in Las Vegas” residency due to ongoing health issues.
In May, she said she was responding well to treatment and improving every day but needed more time before she could return to live performances.
Parton will not perform in the musical, but said it gives audiences a chance to see her life story in a new way.
She stated, “My whole life has been a musical. A grand ole opera really.
“We have a wonderful director, sets, costumes, choreography, music, and all the things you need to make a wonderful, entertaining show. Can’t wait to see you there!”
Presale tickets begin on July 8, while general ticket sales open on July 10. Tickets are currently available for performances through November 21, 2027.
