March 12, (THEWILL) – Paris Saint-Germain qualified for the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals following a tense penalty shoot-out victory against Liverpool at Anfield. The French side won 1-0 on the night, levelling the aggregate score and forcing extra time before prevailing on penalties.
Despite Liverpool beginning the match with intensity, PSG took the lead after 12 minutes through Ousmane Dembele, whose clinical finish brought the tie level on aggregate. The goal came against the run of play but demonstrated the French team’s effectiveness in front of goal.
Liverpool thought they had equalised early in the second half when Dominik Szoboszlai found the net, but the goal was disallowed for offside. The home side continued to push forward and nearly scored when Jarell Quansah saw his diving header strike the inside of the post with only 10 minutes remaining in regulation time.
With neither team able to find a winner in normal time or the additional 30 minutes of extra time, the match proceeded to penalties. PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma proved decisive, saving spot kicks from both Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones, before Desire Doue converted the winning penalty to send the Parisians through.
The result means PSG join the elite group of teams in the UCL quarter-finals for the 2024/2025 campaign, while Liverpool exit the competition despite their strong domestic form this season.
