April 08, (THEWILL) – It was a dramatic finish at Monza’s Stadio Brianteo as a last-gasp penalty kept Udinese in the game and prevented Monza from securing all three points in their 2-2 finish.
The hosts had turned around an early goal by Sandi Lovric to take a 2-1 lead in the second half, but Beto’s penalty in stoppage time brought Udinese level and ensured that the spoils were shared in the matchday 29 fixture.
Both teams were performing better than expected this season and were fighting for a place in the top 10. Udinese had two early penalty appeals denied, while Monza goalkeeper, Michele Di Gregorio, was kept busy by Lovric and Lazar Samardzic’s attempts on goal.
After going behind through Lovric’s goal, Monza equalised shortly after the break and then took the lead with a well-crafted counter-attack. However, in the final minute of the game, a clumsy challenge by Andrea Petagna led to a penalty for Udinese, which Beto converted to salvage a point for his team.
Both sides resume action next weekend in the Serie A with Monza away at Inter Milan on Saturday, while Udinese travel to face Roma the following day.
