August 26, (THEWILL) – Olympic champion, Armand Duplantis of Sweden captured his second consecutive world pole vault title on Saturday, at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
The 23-year-old cleared 6.10 meters to claim the gold medal. Duplantis, who also holds the world record of 6.20m set earlier this year, was the clear favourite coming into the competition. He has dominated the event over the past few seasons and solidified his status as the world’s top vaulter with the win on Saturday.
Ernest John Obiena of the Philippines took home the silver medal after clearing 6.00m. Meanwhile, there was a tie for the bronze between Kurtis Marschall of Australia and Christopher Nilsen of the United States, who both cleared 5.95m.
Duplantis’ triumph comes just three days after an unusual shared gold medal in the women’s pole vault between Katie Moon of the United States and Nina Kennedy of Australia. This time, there was no doubt who the winner was, as Duplantis cleared the bar with room to spare on his winning jump.
With the gold medal, Duplantis has now won 12 out of 13 competitions he has entered this season. His remarkable consistency and dominance at such a young age suggest he will remain the man to beat in the pole vault for years to come.
