August 26, (THEWILL) – American sprinter, Noah Lyles, cemented his success at the 2023 World Athletics Championships on Saturday, by anchoring the United States 4×100 metres relay team to victory in Budapest.
With this gold medal, Lyles captured his third title at these championships. Despite boasting a deep squad over the years, the US men’s 4x100m team had not won the event at either the Olympics or Worlds since 2000, with multiple mistakes and disqualifications marring their efforts.
However, the American quartet of Christian Coleman, Fred Kerley, Brandon Carnes and Lyles put together a clean race on Saturday, to take gold in a time of 37.38 seconds. 2016 Olympic champion Italy took silver in 37.62s, narrowly holding off a late charge from Jamaica, who took bronze in 37.76s. The British team looked poised for a podium spot but a poor final handoff saw them finish fourth.
Lyles’ brilliant anchor leg brought home a long-awaited relay gold for the US men. It caps off a successful championship for the 25-year-old, who also won the 200m and finished second in the 100m earlier in the week.
After disappointments in recent years, the American men reasserted their 4x100m dominance in Budapest behind a disciplined, well-executed race. Lyles’ contributions in three events played a major role in that redemption story.
