Jennifer Echegini

March 12, (THEWILL) — Nigeria international, Jennifer Echegini, scored the opening goal to set Paris Saint-Germain on their way to a 2-1 victory over Marseille in the Arkema Premiere Ligue on Wednesday.

Echegini converted the rebound from a corner kick taken by Merveille Kanjinga in the 72nd minute, sending the ball into the far corner of the net. Six minutes later, Tara Elimbi Gilbert doubled the lead after receiving a pass from Sakina Karchaoui on the counter-attack.

Marseille pulled one back through Jenny Perret, who met a cross from Melissa Herrera in the 83rd minute. The visitors had kept the home side largely in check before that point, with their goalkeeper denying Echegini with a strong stop in the 10th minute.

PSG controlled the ball for much of the opening period but failed to turn their possession into clear chances. That changed sharply in the closing stages, with the hosts scoring twice in quick succession to take all three points.

Fellow Nigerian, Rasheedat Ajibade, started for PSG before her departure at the interval. The result lifted the club to fourth position in the Arkema Premiere Ligue table with 32 points.
