December 27, (THEWILL) – Aston Villa forward, Jhon Duran, will serve a three-match suspension after the England Football Association rejected his appeal against a red card received during the club’s 3-0 defeat at Newcastle United on Boxing Day.
The Colombian international received his marching orders following an incident with Newcastle defender, Fabian Schar, where both of Duran’s boots made contact with the defender’s back. Referee Anthony Taylor immediately produced a red card for the offence, which occurred after Newcastle had established a one-goal advantage.
Villa confirmed the unsuccessful appeal through an official statement: “Our decision to appeal Jhon Duran’s red card in our match with Newcastle United has been rejected. The player will now miss our next three matches.”
The English Premier League match centre indicated that Duran’s dismissal stemmed from “violent conduct,” with Video Assistant Referee (VAR) supporting the on-field decision. Following the confirmation, Duran demonstrated his frustration by striking a water bottle on the touchline at St James’ Park.
Villa manager, Unai Emery, questioned the decision-making process, stating: “Wow, it is hard to accept. Because the foot is not clear if it is touching. Three matches… wow OK. Maybe because it is Jhon Duran. We are working a lot with him to teach him always the good way and he is doing this effort.” Emery further emphasised his support for VAR while suggesting its implementation could have been more thorough.
The suspension means Duran will be unavailable for Premier League fixtures against Brighton and Hove Albion and Leicester City, plus an FA Cup third-round match versus West Ham United on 10 January at Villa Park.
