SAN FRANCISCO, November 11, (THEWILL) – After only a few weeks of asking football fans to pay £14.95 for any individual English Premier League (EPL) game they wanted to watch that was outside the regularly scheduled Sky and BT Sport televised games, the Premier League is going to leave their pay-per-view (PPV) system behind.
Richard Masters, Chief Executive of the EPL has confirmed that the League is planning to move away from the PPV. He stopped short of confirming what it will be replaced with.
“We took a decision to move to pay-per-view and now we are reviewing that decision,” Masters said.
“We have listened to feedback. We will be changing direction and moving away from it and taking another step that will see us through lockdown, the Christmas period, and into January. I can’t announce what it is.”
Various options are available for the League going forward. The EPL could return to showing the extra matches for free, as they did when the League resumed from the coronavirus-enforced break without fans on the grounds.
Otherwise, they could charge an additional monthly fee for the extra games, rather than making fans pay on a game-by-game basis. Also, they could refuse to show the games altogether, which obviously will not go down very well with EPL fans.
Feasibly, the management is most likely to revert to the model in place at the start of the season and show the extra games for free. But, there was no final decision made known from the chief executive.
With the feedback loop, whatever they decide, the new system will be reviewed again in mid-January.
