April 01, (THEWILL) – Graham Potter has again expressed his frustration with his team’s performance after they suffered a 2-0 defeat against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge.
Ollie Watkins opened the scoring for Villa in the 18th minute with a brilliant lob, while John McGinn sealed the victory for the visitors with his first goal in 16 months in the second half. Chelsea had 27 attempts at goal, but consistently failed to convert any of their chances.
While Potter saw some positives in his team’s performance, he was left disappointed with their inability to find the back of the net and their defensive sloppiness. “I think in both boxes we were second best,” Potter said in a post-match interview. “There are a lot of good things in the game. “Ultimately you need to defend better than we did, and of course I’m responsible for that. We need to look at that and do better.” Yet, Potter refrained from blaming his players for the defeat, even as he acknowledged that they need to improve their defensive performance.
Indeed, Chelsea have now suffered four home defeats this season, failing to score in each of those games. Their next match is against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, and Potter is of the mind that it is a fantastic opportunity for his team to put things right. The truth is the Blues will be facing a Jurgen Klopp side smarting from the heavy 4-1 defeat against Manchester City and it will be an uphill task to get a win.
The defeat against Aston Villa is a significant blow to Chelsea’s hopes of finishing in the top four as they have slumped to the bottom 10 and Potter knows that he is under pressure to turn things around. If the team continues to produce inconsistent performances and suffer defeats, he could be facing the axe. The upcoming games will be crucial for Potter, and he needs to find a way to motivate his players to perform at their best and deliver results.
