November 11, (THEWILL) – David Coote, a referee in the English Premier League, has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation.
This action was prompted by the circulation of a video on social media, which allegedly depicts Coote making derogatory comments about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. According to the video clip, Coote described Klopp as “arrogant” and used offensive language.
The 42-year-old referee oversaw Liverpool’s recent 2-0 victory against Aston Villa last Saturday. However, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), has now taken decisive action, clarifying in a statement that “David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation” and that “PGMOL will be making no further comment until that process is complete.”
The timing and origin of the video footage remains unclear. Nevertheless, this incident has sparked significant concern and controversy within the world of EPL officiating. Klopp, who left his position as Liverpool manager in the summer of 2023, has yet to comment on the matter publicly.
