June 24, (THEWILL) – Hungarian striker Barnabas Varga remains in stable condition following a serious injury during Hungary’s final group match at Euro 2024. The incident occurred midway through the second half of the Group A game against Scotland, resulting in a 10-minute halt to play.
The 29-year-old suffered multiple facial fractures and a concussion after colliding with Scottish goalkeeper Angus Gunn. The Hungarian Football Federation confirmed via social media that the Ferencváros forward will likely require surgery and will miss the remainder of the tournament should Hungary advance.
The severity of the situation was evident as Varga’s teammates shielded him with blankets while medical staff attended to him on the pitch. Both sets of supporters applauded as the player was stretchered off the field, demonstrating a united show of concern for his well-being.
Despite the distressing incident, Hungary managed to clinch a dramatic 1-0 victory with a stoppage-time goal from substitute Kevin Csoboth. Midfielder Roland Sallai expressed the team’s emotional state, saying: “It was terrible to see Barnabas like that.
