April 13, (THEWILL) – Feyenoord got their revenge against Roma in a tight encounter in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final.
The Dutch side, who lost to the Italian giants in last season’s UEFA Europa Conference League final, secured a 1-0 victory, thanks to Mats Wieffer’s second-half strike. Roma had a chance to level the game from the penalty spot but Lorenzo Pellegrini’s effort hit the post.
Jose Mourinho’s team struggled to create opportunities throughout the game, with their star player, Paulo Dybala, being forced off with an injury after just 25 minutes. Feyenoord, on the other hand, only threatened with half chances, but they were able to convert one of them into the winning goal. The match also saw Tammy Abraham being taken off injured.
Feyenoord will head into the second leg with a crucial one-goal advantage, while Roma will have to improve significantly if they are to progress to the semi-finals. The Italian side will hope to have Dybala and Abraham back in their squad for the crucial fixture, especially as they will need goals to scale through.
In the meantime, Feyenoord will focus on their upcoming Eredivisie clash against Cambuur, while Roma will face Udinese in Serie A action on Sunday.
