April 13, (THEWILL) – Manchester United’s Europa League progress got off to a rocky start as they squandered a comfortable lead to draw 2-2 against Sevilla in the first leg of their quarter-final tie.
Although the Red Devils were in complete control for most of the game, they were undone by two own goals from Harry Maguire and Tyrell Malacia in the closing stages of the match. Maguire deflected the ball into his own net in the 92nd minute, just eight minutes after Malacia had hit past David de Gea, to equalise for Sevilla.
Marcel Sabitzer had scored twice in the first half to put United in a commanding position, but the late drama left the home side reeling by full-time. Sevilla will now have home advantage in the second leg of the tie, as they aim to secure their seventh Europa League title since the 2006/2007 season.
Before then, however, United’s attention will turn to their upcoming English Premier League match against Nottingham Forest, while Sevilla will face Valencia in La Liga action on Sunday.
